Stephen Robertson, University of Sydney, Australia Introduction In western law, the age of consent is the age at which an individual is treated as capable of consenting to sexual activity. Consequently, any one who has sex with an underage individual, regardless of the circumstances, is guilty of a crime. Narrowly concerned with sexual violence, and with girls, originally, since the 19th century the age of consent has occupied a central place in debates over the nature of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, and been drawn into campaigns against prostitution and child marriage, struggles to achieve gender and sexual equality, and the response to teenage pregnancy.
This module traces the shifting ways that the law has been defined, debated and deployed worldwide and from the Middle Ages to the present. An age of consent statute first appeared in secular law in in England as part of the rape law. The statute, Westminster 1, made it a misdemeanor to “ravish” a “maiden within age,” whether with or without her consent. The phrase “within age” was interpreted by jurist Sir Edward Coke as meaning the age of marriage, which at the time was 12 years of age. A law making it a felony to “unlawfully and carnally know and abuse any woman child under the age of 10 years” was generally interpreted as creating more severe punishments when girls were under 10 years old while retaining the lesser punishment for acts with and year-old girls.
Jurist Sir Matthew Hale argued that the age of consent applied to and year-old girls, but most of England’s North American colonies adopted the younger age. A small group of Italian and German states that introduced an age of consent in the 16th century also employed 12 years. An underage girl did not have to physically struggle and resist to the limit of her capacity in order to convince a court of her lack of consent to a sexual act, as older females did; in other words, the age of consent made it easier to prosecute a man who sexually assaulted an underage girl.
However, since the age of consent applied in all circumstances, not just in physical assaults, the law also made it impossible for an underage female to consent to sexual activity.

In the s several liberal ministers and professors were subjected to church trials on charges of heresy and apostasy ; the most famous such trial involved Charles A. In a group of Roman Catholic New Yorkers wanted to build a house a worship in Manhattan, a Catholic Church that could serve as the community center, meeting place and site of worship for that Christian community. The proposed building was the focus of Protestant anger, distrust and discrimination. Some feared the project was being underwritten by foreigners. Concerned residents staged demonstrations, some of which turned bitter.
The desire of a minority religion in the United States to build a house of worship in New York City near the turn of the 18th Century, eerily mirrors recent protests, vitriolic attitudes and unshielded discrimination that has been directed at the Muslim community in general and the Park51 developers in particular. Citing the pastor of the Roman Catholic parish, now celebrating its th anniversary, Vitello outlined some of the similarities between the two eras of protest and discrimination.
For starters, he said, there was the effort to move the church project somewhere else. Unlike the organizers of Park51, who have resisted suggestions they move the project to avoid having a mosque so close to the killing field of ground zero, the Catholics complied. Then there were fears about nefarious foreign backers.

The triennial General Assembly is one of the most important scientific events of the African continent. It provides the African social science research community with a unique opportunity to reflect on some of the key issues facing the social sciences in particular, and Africa and the world at large. Africa and the Challenges of the Twenty-First Century. The 21st century, like the previous one does not seem capable of breaking from the paradigm of the complex and the uncertain.
This underscores the legitimacy of an approach that is founded on a rupture: It is also a question of deconstructing what some have called “the confinement of Africa in a rent economy” in order to more critically understand the opportunities available to the continent but also the constraints facing it, because the basic question is how, in the course of this 21st century, to oppose to the “invention of Africa” an “invention of the world” by Africa.

The Role of the Wife and Mother In the later nineteenth century things for women began to change. No doubt this had something to do with modernity and its intrinsic insistence on change, and no doubt it had something to do with the actions of women themselves, with their desire to break out of the limits imposed on their sex. The nineteenth century therefore apears to have been a turning point in the long history of women. The old tensions were still present between work at home or in the shop and family, between the domestic ideal and social utility, beween the world of appearances, dress, and pleasure and the world of subsistence, aprenticeship, and the practice of a profession, and between religious practice as spiritual exercise and social regulator and the new realm of education in secular schools.
Motherhood “About every true mother there is a sancity of martyrdom- and when she is no more in the body, her children see her with the ring of light around her head. With the influx of Southern European and other non-WASP immigrants in the latter half of the nineteenth century, many Americans feared losing what was then considered American. Women were having fewer children because of new opportunities available to them and because children were no longer as necessary as they were when families worked on farms.
At the turn of the century, President Roosevelt popularized the idea of “race suicide” and encouraged childbirth to ensure the longevity of the nation.
How do you uphold your cultural beliefs and try to date at the same time? I am a year-old Indian lad who was born into a Sikh household. Now, I admit I am not particularly strict, especially as I eat meat and drink alcohol but I do follow a lot of the traditions upheld with Sikhism.
The 2,year-old list of sins in Galatians –21 is still familiar ground for those of us living in the 21st century. That list is followed by another list—the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Steve KeysEmail, Twitter, Facebook , MySpace, YouTube, Delicious, Digg, LinkedIn, blogs of course , and scores of others—all part of the new and wonderful ways we can now connect with one another electronically, each with its own culture and unique set of rules. In one sense, the planet has never been more interconnected.
And yet, this interconnectedness, while wonderful, hasn’t come without cost. From pornography to merely surfing the web, the Internet is clearly the television of the 21st century, an electronic drug that often yanks us away from the physical world. Like any addiction, the real cost, for those of us who are truly addicted, is to the number and quality of our relationships with others.
We may enjoy online relationships using social media sites like Facebook or Twitter, for example, but the difference between these kinds of interactions and interactions with people in the physical world is clearly vast. As long as we expect no more from these online relationships than they can give, no good reason exists why we can’t enjoy the power of social media sites to connect us efficiently to people we’d otherwise not touch. The problem, however, comes when we find ourselves subtly substituting electronic relationships for physical ones or mistaking our electronic relationships for physical ones.
We may feel we’re connecting effectively with others via the Internet, but too much electronic-relating paradoxically engenders a sense of social isolation. For example, we write things like “LOL” and “LMOA” to describe our laughter , but they’re no real substitute for hearing people laugh, which has real power to lift our spirits when we’re feeling low. I’ve also observed people using electronic media to make confrontation easier and have seen more than one relationship falter as a result.
People are often uncomfortable with face-to-face confrontation, so it’s easy to understand why they’d choose to use the Internet. Precisely because electronic media transmit emotion so poorly compared to in-person interaction, many view it as the perfect way to send difficult messages: Unfortunately, this also usually means we don’t transmit these messages with as much empathy , and often find ourselves sending a different message than we intended and breeding more confusion than we realize.

Marriage rituals The rituals and ceremonies surrounding marriage in most cultures are associated primarily with fecundity and validate the importance of marriage for the continuation of a clan , people, or society. They also assert a familial or communal sanction of the mutual choice and an understanding of the difficulties and sacrifices involved in making what is considered, in most cases, to be a lifelong commitment to and responsibility for the welfare of spouse and children.
Marriage ceremonies include symbolic rites, often sanctified by a religious order, which are thought to confer good fortune on the couple. Because economic considerations play an essential role in the success of child rearing, the offering of gifts, both real and symbolic, to the married couple are a significant part of the marriage ritual. Some of the oldest rituals still to be found in contemporary ceremonies include the prominent display of fruits or of cereal grains that may be sprinkled over the couple or on their nuptial bed, the accompaniment of a small child with the bride, and the breaking of an object or food to ensure a successful consummation of the marriage and an easy childbirth.
The most universal ritual is one that symbolizes a sacred union.
God first conversed with the world by speaking to Adam in the Garden of Eden. He told Noah to build an ark and spoke to Moses in a burning bush. Paul heard God when he was on the way to Damascus.

Courting Desire: Love and Intimacy in Late 19th and early 20th Century Kwazulu
While everyone wants to be happy—and assumes that following the established norm is the right way to achieve happiness—most remain miserable and never know why. This is especially true in the world of modern dating. Dating, followed by courtship, is supposed to lead to a happy marriage. But marriage cannot be happy if it is not built on the right foundation. Most couples have no idea that the foundation of a successful marriage begins long before the wedding day.

Arrow Executive Editor, desiringGod. You could have heard a pin drop. I had pilgrimaged from Minnesota to muggy Orlando, and her stifling August humidity, for a weeklong intensive course on evangelism with Steve Childers. Fortunately, Reformed Theological Seminary is as air-conditioned as it is Reformed. During these precious hours, the Beijing Olympics were playing second fiddle to learning about the advance of the gospel around the world and in personal conversation. Time and again Childers had thrown us curveballs.
He knew how to keep us on our toes. But now he had us nothing short of captivated. Wow, the key, we were thinking. He paused and smiled that memorable Steve Childers world-evangelism grin. Hospitality and Post-Christendom In a progressively post-Christian society, the importance of hospitality as an evangelistic asset is growing rapidly. Increasingly, the most strategic turf on which to engage the unbelieving with the good news of Jesus may be the turf of our own homes.
Where will you interact with the unbelieving about the things that matter most? Invite them to dinner.
